Willem de Kooning was one of the most important and influential artists of the 20th century. de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Hans Hoffman were the three most important practitioners of Abstract Expressionism. From the early 1950s, de Kooning’s work exhibited a vitality and energy that he was able to sustain in his works into the 60s and early 70s. de Kooning drawings normally exhibit areas of extreme energy and activity contrasted with areas of rest. Drawings such as this are typical of those de Kooning was producing during the late 1950s and early 1960s
