UTAGAWA KUNISADA JAPANESE UKIYO E WOODBLOCK PRINT - An antique Japanese woodblock print, Ukiyo e series, Seeking Shelter from the Rain, by Utagawa Kunisada also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III, Japanese 1786 to 1865. The print depicts a genre scene of a group of people seeking shelter from the rain in an entryway. At lower right, a geisha with an umbrella grins up at the man at left, who stares back at her with a worried frown. He carries a small child on his back who has a hand drum resting over his shoulder. A blind man can be seen at upper right. Raindrops slant across the scene. The actors include Iwai Shijaku I as the geisha, Nakamura Fukusuke I, Seki Sanjuro III, and Nakamura Utaemon IV. An attractive design with expressive figures in a nicely detailed setting. Signed with Calligraphy in the print, lower and upper right, and upper and lower left. Framed. Utagawa Kunisada was a Japanese ukiyo e artist. He is considered the most popular, prolific and commercially successful designer of ukiyo e woodblock prints in 19th century Japan.
