ANTIQUE ELKINGTON CO ELECTROTYPE OF CHARLES V EWER - A very elegantly processed electrotype ewer made by Elkington and Co. after a sixteenth-century (1558–59) original ewer created in Antwerp and known as Charles V. The original is now kept in the Louvre, Paris. The underside with a cachet marked, Elkington Department of Science and Art encircling a crowned VR, Copyright Science and Art Depart. Victorian era, 19th century. Note: Electrotyping is a chemical method used to produce a metal facsimile of any object. The process consists in forming from the model a soft material mold (wax or gutta-percha) and coating its surface with a thin layer of graphite powder to make it electrically conductive. In 1867 fifteen European nations signed the Convention for the International Exchange of Reproductions of Works of Art, permitting Elkington and Son and Franchi and Son to produce replicas of objects from the royal treasures of Germany, France, Russia and England.
