LES AVENTURES DU DERNIER ABENCERAGE HAND COLORED PRINT - Hand-colored gravure on paper. Plate from the late 19th century Oeuvres completes de M. le vicomte de Chateaubriand, Complete works of Francois-Rene, vicomte de Chateaubriand. Presumably an illustration by Gaston Vuillier, 1845 to 1915, a French painter and ethnographer. The artwork depicts a scene from Les Aventures du dernier Abencerage, The Adventures of the last Abencerrage, a fictional story recounting the adventures of the last member of the Abencerages, a noble Muslim family exiled after the capture of Granada in 1492. Aben-Hamet, a Muslim, the last descendant of the Abencerages, travels to Granada, where his ancestors reigned. He falls in love with Blanca, a Christian, descendant of a wealthy Spanish family. They only agree to love each other if one converts to the others religion. Thomas of Foix appears in this account as a suitor of Blanca, having been taken prisoner with Francis I in Spain following the Battle of Pavia. Blanca is a descendant of El Cid , her father is Don Rodrigo, married to Teresa of Jerez, and therefore Blancas mother, and her brother is Don Carlos. Framed.
