Vladimir Yakovlev (1934-1998) is a Russian nonconformist artist, one of the most prominent representatives of the generation of the “sixties” and unofficial Moscow art, a member of the Union of Russian Artists. Yakovlev is one of the most unique Russian artists of the twentieth century. The master found his own style and his works began to attract public attention. Professionals and ordinary art lovers all recognized his unique gift and greatly respected him as an artist. Vladimir Yakovlev never studied painting; he completed only 4 years of high school. Impressed by an exhibition of modern Western art, seen during the World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow in 1957, he became interested in modern painting and decided to devote himself to art. By the end of the 1970s, due to an illness suffered in his youth, he practically lost his sight. He spent his last years in a hospital for the mentally ill. Yakovlev painted primarily in gouache on paper or hardboard, preferring restrained, cool tones. He went through a period of non-objective painting (lyrical abstractionism in the manner of J. Pollock), and experienced the influence of Picasso. The artist’s mature works were created in line with the “new figuration” - an avant-garde movement that returned from abstraction to the subject, perceived with a new dramatism. His portraits, still lifes, as well as the famous “flowers” ​​impress with the depth of lonely existence in a picturesque space, hidden in the energy of resistance. In 1963, the first official exhibition of Yakovlev in the USSR was organized - a one-day exhibition together with Eduard Steinberg at the F. M. Dostoevsky Museum. Abroad, the artist’s works were presented at the exhibition “Russian Avant-Garde in Today’s Moscow” at the Gmurzhinsk Gallery (Cologne, 1970), etc. The works of Vladimir Yakovlev are kept in many Russian and foreign museums, in private collections in Russia and abroad. In 1990-1991, the artist’s works were shown at the exhibition “Other Art. Moscow 1956-1976”, organized by the State Tretyakov Gallery and the State Russian Museum. In 1995, his personal exhibition took place at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
