Born into the family of an artist. He received his artistic education at the Moscow Secondary Art School, and then at the art department of the Moscow Printing Institute, from which he graduated in 1962. In the fall of the same year, he participated in the notorious exhibition in Manege, which N. S. Khrushchev visited and organized a defeat of avant-garde artists there, which became a turn back in his policy of de-Stalinization of the Soviet system. In the years that followed this event, Vladimir Yankilevsky, in order to earn a living, worked as an artist-designer in Moscow publishing houses and spent most of his time in his atelier doing graphics and painting. For many years he was not able to publicly display his works in exhibition halls controlled by the Academy of Arts and the Ministry of Culture. Only sporadic semi-official, “closed” one-day screenings at research institutes for their employees were possible. And only after the international scandal in connection with the destruction of the so-called “bulldozer exhibition” in 1974, it became possible to display his works in public halls. The first major retrospective exhibition of Yankilevsky took place in Moscow in 1978.
