In his youth, Mikhail Shemyakin was expelled from the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture for ideological reasons; he continued his studies on his own, copying the old masters in the Hermitage. In the USSR, the artist Shemyakin participated in underground exhibitions, exhibited works in the West, and in 1971 he was expelled from the country. Until 1980, the artist lived in France, then in the USA. Mikhail Shemyakin is close to the culture of carnival, color, paint, the combination of mysterious games, laughter and absolute seriousness, his element is mystery; Most of all, the sculpture of Shemyakin causes controversy in our country. The artist clearly showed himself in the field of theatrical design. In the West, Mikhail Shemyakin practically started from scratch, but managed to make a name for himself and go down in the history of world art. In 1993, Mikhail Shemyakin was awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation.
