A Dictionary Of The English Language by Samuel Johnson LL.D. Stereotyped verbatim from the Authors Last Folio Edition published by Henry G Bohn, York Street, Covent Garden, London MDCCCXLIII (1843), a very nicely hardbound book in part leather with marbled boards and page edges, 1368 pages, approx 18cm x 26cm and is in a really very good / near fine condition. This dictionary also has an interesting unsigned inscription (see photographs). Research indicates that this inscription is very likely to be by Stuart Petre Brodie Mais (4th July 1885 to 21st April 1975) known as SPB Mais, he was a British author, journalist and broadcaster. The inscription "To Jill" probably refers to his lover Winifred Doughty (1905 - 1993) who changed her name by deed pole to Gillian 'Jill' Mais. Following his refusal to marry her, /Jill Mais eventually left SPB Mais for a mutual friend (Dudley Carew), married him and lived across the road from SPB Mais regularly taking him meals!
