NIKOLAY SHVERNIK
(1888 - 1970) President under Stalin, Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet from 1946 until 1953. The post was theoretically the highest office in the nation, but Stalin was always completely in charge. Following the death of Stalin, Shvernik was removed from this position and became the chairman of the All-Union Central Council of Trade Unions. In 1956, after his work in the Pospelov Commission, which was the basis of Khrushchev's 'Secret Speech' denouncing Stalinism, Khrushchev recommended Shvernik for the post of chairman of the Party Control Committee and later put him in charge of rehabilitating the victims of Stalin's purges (Shvernik Commission). T.L.S. sent to Arvid Yanovich Pelshe, asking to help a Communist woman to get access to an assisted living facility. Very rare, original signature by Shvernik, dated August 5, 1969. 8.25 x 12 in., mailing folds, small staple holes in the upper left corner, very good.
