A MONUMENTAL ICON SHOWING THE EXALTATION OF THE TRUE CROSS Russian, 18th century Tempera on wood panel. FInely executed on a gold ground. Depicted against an elaborate architectural background, in the middle Patriarch of Jerusalem Makarios raising the true cross with both hands flanked by two diacons. In the foreground Empress Helena and a group of male believers. The figures rendered gracefully, in classical proportions. Executed in bright colours predominantely pink and golds. Minimally restored. 67 x 52.7 cm.
