A GEORGE PERINE PORTRAIT ENGRAVING, EMPRESS MARIA ALEXANDROVNA, RUSSIAN
This engraving depicts the empress in a half-length adorned with copious pearls, in a period frame with reticulated scrollwork. George Edward Perine engraved the image after the original portrait by Franz Xaver Winterhalter.
George Edward Perine (1837-1885) was an American artist, engraver, and publisher. He was employed by New York engravers in 1858-1860 and in 1860 began engraving on his own and soon established a successful business in New York City.
Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805-1873) was a German painter and lithographer, known for his flattering portraits of royalty and upper-class society in the mid-19th century. During the 1850s and 1860s, Winterhalter painted a number of important portraits of Polish and Russian aristocrats. In 1857, he painted the portrait of Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna.
