A HEINRICH KARL SCHOLZ, DECLARATION OF LOVE, ART DECO BRONZE SCULPTURE, 1919
An early Art Deco patinated bronze sculpture, dated 1919 by Vienna-based Bohemian artist Heinrich Karl Scholz (1880-1937), and titled as Declaration of Love. Extremely dynamic composition developing on a vertical axis in which both figures antagonize and complement at once on a dramatic scene of love between a slender nude female and a flexible, as if gutta percha, harlequin. The unusual sense of movement and plasticity, present in this bronze piece, comes from the experimentation of the artist with avant-garde materials and technical solutions. Scholz created numerous small statuettes and medals that were reproduced as figurines or bronze casts even years after his death.
