Ivan Bilibin, an original watercolor on paper painting depicting Ivan Tsarevich trying to catch the Firebird. Signed by the author and dated 1899 lower left. Matted, housed in a frame.
This painting, being an illustration for the fairytale "Ivan Tsarevich, The Firebird, and The Grey Wolf", was often reproduced in llaterr years on postcards.
Note: Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin (1876-1942) was Russian artist, famous illustrator of Russian fairy tales and epics, including fairy tales by Alexander Pushkin, theater designer, member of the World of Art group. Bilibin remains unsurpassed the most famous Russian book illustrator, a master of the Russian fairy tale theme.
