A SCARCE RUSSIAN PORCELAIN GILT CUP AND SAUCER WITH A VIEW OF KAZANSKY CATHEDRAL, 19TH CENTURY

The cylindrical cup is richly decorated in matte and burnished gilding with stylized palmettes and foliate scrolls, raised on three paw-form feet, and fitted with a scrolled handle. The central painted reserve depicts a panoramic view of Kazansky Cathedral and the surrounding colonnaded square in St. Petersburg, with finely executed figures strolling in the foreground. The matching saucer is gilded en suite, with a matte gilt well and a band of foliate ornament.

An impressed numeral to the underside of the saucer, as typically found on certain St. Petersburg Imperial ware from the mid-19th century, was produced for the aristocratic and affluent public market. The architectural view is rendered with notable precision, consistent with works produced circa 1835–1860, when views of major St. Petersburg monuments became popular subjects in Russian porcelain.
