A PAIR OF SOVIET PORCELAIN PORTRAIT CUPS AND SAUCERS, DMITROVSKAYA PORCELAIN FACTORY (FORMERLY GARDNER), RUSSIA, CIRCA 1920–1925

Each of cylindrical form with loop handle, paired with a matching saucer, decorated predominantly in green with painted reserve portrait medallions and gilt enrichment. One cup decorated with a female portrait in classical dress within an oval cartouche, the other with a pastoral figural scene depicting two peasants with sheep, similarly framed. The saucers are decorated en suite, each repeating the portrait motif at the rim, surrounded by gilt ornamental borders. The reverse bearing blue underglaze Soviet state marks of the Dmitrovskaya Porcelain Factory, including the hammer and sickle emblem within a wreath and circular Cyrillic inscriptions indicating state ownership and production in the early post-Revolutionary period. The forms derive from pre-Revolutionary Gardner shapes, while the decoration reflects the transitional aesthetic of early Soviet porcelain, combining traditional motifs with newly imposed factory marks.

Condition: Very good overall condition. Minor rubbing and thinning to gilt decoration. Light surface wear and small firing imperfections consistent with early Soviet production. No cracks or restoration.
