описание:

A MEISSEN PORCELAIN LIDDED CONTAINER WITH A DOG FINIAL, C. 1937-1945

Hard-paste porcelain of cylindrical form, the domed lid surmounted by a finely modeled seated lapdog with long ears and tail, painted in naturalistic tones and wearing a pink ribbon bow. The box and cover are decorated with scattered purple flower sprigs with yellow accents, with light plum and gilt banding at the rim. The underside bears the underglaze blue crossed swords mark of the Meissen manufactory incised with four horizontal lines representing their 'faulty ware' grade, along with incised and painted inventory or work numbers. The lively modeling of the dog finial and the restrained floral decoration are characteristic of Meissen table and toilet wares produced during the 1930s and 1940s, reflecting the taste for intimate, decorative objects combining animal sculpture with functional porcelain forms.

Lit.: Paul Scheurich, Meissener Manuskripte vol. 8, ill. p. 130.
