A PAIR OF MEISSEN WHITE PORCELAIN FIGURES OF AN 18TH CENTURY GENTLEMAN AND LADY, MODELED BY PAUL SCHEURICH, GERMANY, FIRST HALF 20TH CENTURY

White-glazed porcelain figural group comprising a standing gentleman and lady dressed in refined 18th-century court costume, conceived in the restrained modern classicism characteristic of Paul Scheurich’s important work for Meissen during the interwar period. The male figure is modeled wearing a tricorn hat, waistcoat and long coat, his stance relaxed yet self-assured, one hand raised in conversational gesture while the other rests near his side. The female figure is depicted in a long fitted dress with flared skirt and structured bodice, holding a slender parasol or staff, her posture elegant and composed. Both figures emphasize graceful proportions, sculptural clarity and balanced silhouettes, with decoration deliberately limited to pure white glaze to highlight form, modeling and surface rhythm rather than polychromy. The compositions reflect Meissen’s early 20th-century revival of Rococo-inspired subject matter reinterpreted through a modern sculptural vocabulary, aligning with Scheurich’s broader exploration of historical themes rendered in simplified and refined form.

Each figure stands on an integral-shaped base. The undersides bear the underglaze blue crossed swords marks of Meissen, together with impressed factory marks, model numbers and firing signs, indicating first quality production. The pair is conceived as a pendant set and displays strong visual harmony in scale, pose and stylistic treatment, making it well-suited for symmetrical display.
