A MEISSEN PORCELAIN FIGURE OF A NUDE SHEPHERD, “DER HIRTE” BY PAUL SCHEURICH, GERMAN, C. 1919-1923

This model, titled "Der Hirte" and first designed in 1919, represents one of Scheurich’s most refined early figural conceptions for Meissen. Modeled as a standing nude male figure leaning against a tree trunk and holding a long shepherd’s staff, this sculptural composition exemplifies Paul Scheurich’s early modern reinterpretation of classical figural themes for the Meissen manufactory. The elongated proportions, gentle contrapposto stance, and introspective downward gaze recall Antique prototypes filtered through early 20th-century academic classicism. The figure is wearing a hat with applied feather detail, a characteristic and expressive accent within Scheurich’s figural vocabulary. The figure stands on an integral square base and is leaning against a subtly modeled and naturalistic tree trunk support. The porcelain is finely glazed with delicate flesh-toned enamels accentuating facial features, hair, and extremities. The underside is marked with the underglaze blue crossed swords of the Meissen manufactory, incised model number "F 276", and impressed numerals consistent with period production.
