описание:

A MEISSEN PORCELAIN FIGURAL GROUPING OF HARLEQUIN AND COLUMBINE FROM THE RUSSIAN BALLET "KARNEVAL", MODELED BY PAUL SCHEURICH, GERMANY, FIRST HALF 20TH CENTURY

Porcelain figural group modeled after the characters Harlequin and Columbine from the Russian ballet "Karneval", capturing the pair in an intimate theatrical embrace with their faces pressed together in a playful kiss. Columbine is portrayed in a voluminous ruffled white dress of layered skirts animated by subtle movement and accented with blue bows and floral ornaments in her coiffure, her pose light and coquettish. Harlequin leans toward her in a dynamic contrapposto stance, dressed in a white tunic and vividly painted harlequin-patterned trousers in polychrome geometric blocks, the costume directly referencing stage design and ballet costume traditions. The composition is heightened by a stylized architectural support that lifts the skirt and creates a sense of choreographed motion and stage presence. The sculptural treatment reflects Paul Scheurich’s Art Deco sensibility, marked by elongated proportions, rhythmic modeling and expressive theatricality, characteristic of Meissen’s interwar figural production inspired by modern ballet and commedia dell’arte subjects.

The group is raised on an integral oval base with delicate geometric ornament. The underside bears the underglaze blue crossed swords mark of Meissen, indicating first quality production, together with impressed factory numerals and model designation. The model belongs to Scheurich’s important series of ballet and theater-inspired figures created for Meissen during the 1920s and 1930s, reflecting contemporary European fascination with the Russian Ballet and modern stage design.
