RUSSIAN KHOLMOGORY 19TH CENTURY SEWING CASKET
bone, carving, velvet
13.6 x 21.8 x 14.6cm
Kholmogorsk carved bone is a folk art craft formed and practiced in the villages of the Kholmogorsk district of the Arkhangelsk region. The first known examples of products made in this manner date back to the 17th century, but the carving techniques that distinguish this type of craft from other similar ones were developed only by the 18th century. These include, for example, the combination of through-hole ornamentation and relief images.
