ROSTAND EDMOND: (1868-1918) - ROSTAND EDMOND: (1868-1918) French Poet. Best known for his play Cyrano de Bergerac . A very fine A.L.S. ` Edmond Rostand ´, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d., to a French Minister, in French. The letter bears to the upper left corner a golden embossed monogram with his initials. Rostand in his usual clean and attractive fountain pen ink writing, thanks his correspondent for his gesture and for the way in which he has made him such a favour, and states in part ` J´apprends avec joie que mon protégé vient d´être palmé ! Comment vous remercier d´avoir pensé à me faire cette surprise? et de me la faire si galamment? N´entendant parler de rien, je pensais que vous n´aviez pas pensé pouvoir m´accorder ce bout de ruban pour ce pauvre homme´ (”I learn with joy that my protege has just received the decoration! How can I thank you for thinking of giving me this surprise? and do it so gallantly? Hearing nothing, I thought you didn't think you could grant me that piece of ribbon for that poor man”) Rostand further expresses again his deep gratitude to the Minister, saying ` Mais votre silence n´était qu´une aimable et spirituelle malice, destinée à donner plus de prix à la faveur en la rendant imprévue…C´est la premiere fois que je me sens du credit !..´ (”But your silence was only a kind and witty malice, intended to give more value to the favour by making it unforeseen…”) With blank integral leaf. Together with an attractive hard cover theatre programme for the premiere of Chantecler, a Rostand´s play in four acts, twelve pages, 4to, dated in Paris, 6 th February 1910 with a red ink stamp to the inside front blank page. The play was premiered on 7 th of February 1910 at the Theatre de la Porte Saint-Martin in Paris. The programme shows printed photographs of the directors, Coquelin aîné, Henry Hertz and Jean Coquelin, of Rostand, and of the main roles played by Lucien Guitry and Madame Simone. VG, 2
