KOESTLER ARTHUR: (1905-1983) - KOESTLER ARTHUR: (1905-1983) Hungarian-born British author and journalist. T.L.S., A. Koestler , with holograph salutation and subscription, one page, 4to, Montpelier Square, London, 6th February 1953, to Professor Bentevich. Koestler writes regarding an inconsistency in a publication and states, in part, 'As far as I can recall after nearly thirty years, the pamphlet in question was a reprint of one or several articles, relating to the 1920-21 riots in Jaffa and Jerusalem, and also to sporadic ambush incidents in the Emek, from Jabotinsky's ”Rassviet”. The adjective ”latest” is therefore out of place, for it refers to the date of the pamphlet or publication and not to the date of the events. I shall insert a correction or footnote to this effect in future editions' . Together with a second T.L.S., A. Koestler , one page, 8vo, Montpelier Square, London, 15th March 1963, to [Tom] Maschler, explaining that he would have been interested in writing a preface 'but I am in the process of finishing a long book, which will take another four or five months, and until then I must avoid any additional commitment' . With a holograph postscript confirming that he had actually received the galleys from Simon and Schuster. Some very light, minor creasing, VG, 2 Tom Maschler (1933-2020) British publisher who, from 1960, was head of the publishing company Jonathan Cape for more than three decades. Maschler was also instrumental in establishing the Booker Prize in 1969.
