An excellent signed T.L.S., `Albert Camus´, 4to, Paris, 28th May 1954, on the Librairie Gallimard printed stationery, to Monsieur K. Bieber, Connecticut College, in French. Camus apologizes for the delay in responding, explaining `...la longue maladie d´un des miens a bouleversé mon travail... Je voudrais répondre oui à votre demande de lettre-préface, mais je suis un peu angoissé par la somme de travail en retard qui s´est accumulé et je voudrais que vous me laissiez une chance de refuser au dernier moment...´ (Translation: "...the long illness of one of mine has disrupted my work... I would like to say yes to your request for a preface letter, but I am a little distressed by the amount of backlog that has accumulated and I would like that you give me a chance to refuse at the last moment...") Further Camus refers to another work, stating `Reste le livre de Elmer Davis. Il a , selon moi, pour des raisons qui seraient trop longues à vous énumérer, peu de chance d´être publié par les Editions Gallimard...´ (Translation: "There remains the book by Elmer Davis. It has, in my opinion, for reasons which would take too long to list, little chance of being published by Editions Gallimard...") Signed in bold black ink at the conclusion. VG
