VICTOR-PERRIN CLAUDE: (1764-1841) Marshal of France. Duc de Belluno. A good A.L.S., ` Le M[aréch] al de Bellune´, one page, 4to, [Paris], 14th May 1818, to the Parisian lawyer Monsieur Lallemand, in French. Marshal Victor explains to his correspondent that they claim to him a debt which he denies being responsible, stating in part ` La promesse que j´ai eu l´honneur de vous faire d´aider Mme Chateuse a se libérer de la dette contractée par son mari envers Mr. Durnée fils, dans le courant de 1819 en tout ce que je pouvais faire pour le momento. Mr. Durnée se trompe si il pense que je suis son débiteur et il me semble assez étrange que l´on ai voulu me rendre responsable d´une dette qui ne me concerne que parce que une fille a bien voulu la reconnaitre. Je ne puis que vous réitérer ma promesse à ce sujet…´ (Translation: “ The promise that I had the honor to make to you to help Mrs. Chateuse to free herself from the debt contracted by her husband with Mr. Durnée fils, in the course of 1819 in all that I could do for the moment. Mr. Durnée is mistaken if he thinks that I am his debtor and it seems to me rather strange that one wanted to make me responsible for a debt that only concerns me because a girl was willing to acknowledge it.
