HEINRICH VII: (1825-1906) Prince Reuss of Kostritz. German diplomat and ambassador. A.L.S., H VII P Reuss, three pages, 8vo, Vienna, 27th June 1879, to a Marquis, on his blind embossed monogrammed stationery, in French. The Prince asks his correspondent to deliver a letter to Her Majesty the Empress and remarks ´Je n´ai pas besoin de vous dire, cher Marquis, avec quel sentiment de profonde sympathie j´ai recu cette terrible nouvelle´ (Translation: ´I do not need to tell you, dear Marquis, with what deep sympathy I received this terrible news´), further adding ´Vous connaissais mon devouement pour votre chere Imperatrice et vous comprendrez ce que j´ai ressenti. Je ne doute pas de son courage pour se soumettre a ces coups cruels du destin, mais il me semble que c´est presque trop pour etre porte!´ (Translation: ´You know my devotion to your dear Empress and you will understand what I felt. I do not doubt her courage in submitting to these cruel blows of fate, but it seems to me that it is almost too much to bear!´). VG
Prince Reuss of Kostriz refers to Eugenie de Montijo (1826-1920) Empress of the French, whose only child, Louis-Napoleon, Prince Imperial (1856-1879), had died on 1st June 1879 at the age of 23 when he was killed in a skirmish with a group of Zulus whilst serving with the British forces in the Anglo-Zulu War.
