VINCENT DE PAUL: (1581-1660) French Catholic priest who dedicated himself to serving the poor. Canonized in 1737. A rare L.S., Vincent de Paul I[ndigne] P[retre] d[e] l[a] M[ission], one page, 8vo, Paris, 18th October 1658, to Firmin Get, the Superior of the Congregation in Marseilles, in French. Je suis cependant, en l´amour de N.S.´ (Translation: ´I ask Mr. Get, superior of the priests of the Mission of Marseille, to intercede on behalf of Mr. Jacques Gaultier, merchant of the same city, with the Lieutenant of the Admiralty of Marseille, in whatever he may request of him and in general in all matters, in consideration of the recommendation made to me by one of my friends. He will also take the trouble, if he pleases, to write to Mr Le Vacher, of Tunis, to assist in any way he can Mr de Beaulieu, merchant, residing in Tunis. I remain, however, in the love of Our Lord´). Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG
Antoine de Valbelle - Lieutenant General of the Admiralty. After 1638 and until his death, during the troubles that marked the minority of King Louis XIV and the government of the Count of Alais, Valbelle was the true master of Marseille.
