MONET CLAUDE: (1840-1926) ´ Jean Renoir did not deceive you....´ - MONET CLAUDE: (1840-1926) French Impressionist painter. A good A.L.S., Claude Monet , four pages, 8vo, Giverny par Vernon, Eure, 15th May 1920, to Albert André, in French. Writing in bold pencil, Monet announces ´Jean Renoir ne vous a pas trompe, et vous pouvez compter sur quelque chose de moi´ (Translation: ´Jean Renoir did not deceive you, and you can count on something from me´ ) and continues ´Ce ne sera peut-être pas une chose très importante mais enfin, je vous donnerai, si minime que ce soit, une toile digne de ce que voulez faire, et qui me parait interessante´ (Translation: ´It may not be anything very significant, but I shall give you—however small it may be—a painting worthy of what you wish to do, and which I find interesting´ ). Monet further confirms that he would be very happy for André to visit Giverny, remarking ´Malheureusement le service des trains en ce moment laisse à désirer et je voudrais cependant vous prier de venir déjeuner sans façon. Il n'existe pas en ce moment de train possible pour Vernon arrivant pour déjeuner à moins de partir de Paris à des heures impossibles, et encore n'en suis-je pas certain, mais je sais qu'il y en a pour Mantes d'où vous pourriez, par un moyen quelconque, vous rendre a Giverny. Pour votre retour, la chose est plus facile. Enfin, consultez vous-même les heures de train, et prévenez moi un ou deux jours d'avance. Some light foxing and minor age wear, about VG Albert André (1869-1954) French Post-Impressionist figurative painter who produced portraits of his closest friend, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Claude Monet (the latter in 1922). In 1919, André produced a monograph, Renoir , considered to be ´one of the most accurate contemporary accounts of the artist's work´, and in 1921, he organised a retrospective of Renoir's work at the Durand-Ruel Gallery. André did indeed accept Monet´s invitation, and visited Giverny in June 1920. Following the visit Monet wrote to André, on 17th June, remarking ´I have just received from Durand-Ruel the two photographs of your portraits of Renoir and would like to thank you for them, knowing full well that they were sent to me on your behalf´, and invited the artist for another lunch at Giverny.
