Letter from the Rabbi Of Zefat, Rabbi Refael Zilberman – Zefat 1894
Letter written by Rabbi Refael Zilberman, the rabbi of Zefat, to his friend, Rabbi Mordechai Ha'Levi Ma'atuk.
Oriental writing on official stationery. In the letter, Rabbi Zilberman shortly addresses a conflict between an Ashkenazic family and a Sephardic one in the city. He also announces that his son, Rabbi Eliezer, is supposed to come to him. In the letter, he mentions familiar names of notable persons in Zefat: Rabbi Shababo and Rabbi Shabtai of Kasmik, the son-in-law of Rabbi Elazar Ya'akov.
Signatures: "Refael Zilberman, rabbinical judge of the Ashkenazic community Zefat". Curly signature. His son, rabbi Elazar, is also signed on the margins of the letter.
Rabbi Refael Zilberman (1839-1918) served as the chief rabbi of the Ashkenazic community of Zefat. He was known for his wisdom also among the Turks, who gave him the title of "Chacham Pasha". He also served as the emissary of the Rebbes of Boyan during the lighting of the Lag Ba'Omer bonfire on the grave of Rashbi.
