Rosh Hashanah Chafing Dish, Owned by the Tzemach Tzedek – Purchased for Him by His Son, the Rebbe Maharash

Chafing dish used by Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Tzemach Tzedek of Lubavitch, to serve the traditional ram's head at Rosh Hashanah feasts. The dish was purchased for him by his son, rabbi Shmuel, Rebbe Maharash of Lubavitch.

Silver-plated, oval chafing dish, comprising three parts: the base of the dish, which includes a container to be filled with warm water, a bowl, and a lid (lid's handle removable). The dish is adorned with vegetal ornaments and stylish side-handles, and set on four stylish legs. [Sheffield? ca. mid-19th century].

Letter of authenticity enclosed (handwritten note, in English), signed in Hebrew by Rebbetzin Chanah Gurary (1899-1991), eldest daughter of Rebbe Rayatz: "I hereby gift... the silver covered dish that my great-grandfather the Maharash bought as a gift for his father the Tzemach Tzedek. It was used to hold pieces of the head of a Ayil - like meaty cheeck pieces which was eaten the night of Rosh Hashana."

Letter of authenticity dated 10 December, 1989.

Enclosed is a large wooden box, which may have also been used in "Beis Rebbe" (the wooden box was handed over alongside the table dish, but is not mentioned in the letter of authenticity).

Approx. 36 cm. Good condition. Abrasions and scratches. Minor blemishes. Wooden box: 32X60X38 cm.
