MUSTER ROLL. Exceptionally large document for Company C, 67th Ohio Infantry, commanded by Marcus M. Spiegel.
Preprinted document completed in brown ink. Signed twice by Spiegel. Remarks section applying to Spiegel states: “Discharged for promotion to the rank of lieutenant Colonel Oct 2nd 1862.”
Suffolk, Virginia,
June 30th - October 31st, 1862.

MUSTER ROLL FOR COMPANY COMMANDED BY THEN CAPTAIN MARCUS M. SPIEGEL.

Spiegel personally recruited - almost to a man - every soldier enrolled in his company as is evident on this muster roll.

Marcus M. Spiegel (1829-64) was one of the highest-ranking Jewish officers in the Union Army during the Civil War.

Later in command as full colonel of the 120th Ohio Infantry, Spiegel would be killed in action at Snaggy Point on the Red River, Louisiana.

Spiegel was buried (or more likely has a cenotaph) in the Jewish Graceland Cemetery, also known as the Hebrew Benevolent Society Cemetery, in Chicago, IL. See www.shapell.org/civil-war-soldier-database/soldier/10271.
