Philadelphia Chippendale Carved Walnut Two-Shell Side Chair
A Philadelphia Chippendale Carved Walnut Two-Shell Side Chair, Third Quarter 18th Century. The Cupid's bow crest rail with knuckled ears and central scallop shell, above a pierced strap work splat centered with a tassel motif above a trapezoidal slip seat, the front rail with central scallop shell, raised on cabriole front legs with acanthus carved knees and returns, terminating in claw-and-ball feet, the side rails having through tenons and pinned into the raked back legs with stump feet. The front seat rails stamped 'VI'.
Dimensions: Height 40 1/4in; width 23in; depth of seat 14 1/2in; seat height 18 1/2in.
Provenance: Property from the Collection of C. Thomas Attix Jr., East Windsor, New Jersey.
Condition:
Structurally sound. Retaining an old darkened, dry and alligatored surface. All four feet have been tipped and restored. The front seat rail with a spliced repair. The shell on seat rail with an old repair / carved restoration. The top left stile with an old break and glued repair. The top of splat with a spliced repair. General marks, wear, nick and surface scratches. The upholstery is in generally good condition.
