Shiryaev buerak. 1870

Paper, graphite pencil. 12 x 20 cm (in the light)

The village of Shiryaevo became famous thanks to the choice of Ilya Yefimovich Repin and friends who settled here for three summer months in 1870 in the house of peasant Ivan Alekseev. While still a student at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, Repin, having experienced a strong impression of the gang of boatmen he saw on the Neva, conceived a picture dedicated to heavy boatmen's labor. A friend, the painter K.A. Savitsky, advised him to go to the "real boatmen" – on the Volga. And soon Ilya Repin, together with his younger brother Vasily and artists F. A. Vasiliev and E. K. Makarov, sailed along the Volga from Tver to Saratov. Sailing past the Zhiguli, they could not help but feel the beauty of these places and landed in Stavropol on the way back. After some time, the friends moved to Shiryaev Buerak: just below this village along the Volga river is Tsarev Kurgan, near which there was then a transshipment base of boatmen; it was here that the young artist intended to study the burlatsky way of life.
