      In iconography, the image of the Mother of God "Of the Three Hands" is of the Hodegetria type, with the Child sitting on the right hand. In the lower part of the icon, under the right hand of the Mother of God, a human hand is imaged that is part of the silver frame of the icon. In the hagiography of St. John of Damascus an episode is given, according to which the emergence of this special iconography is associated with him. Byzantine Emperor Leo III (Isaurus), in a struggle with his ideological opponent John of Damascus, slandered the latter. He was dismissed and punished by having his right hand chopped off and hung in the town square. After a while, John got his severed hand back and, shutting himself away, put the wrist to his hand and prayed before the icon of the Mother of God. After a while, he fell asleep and woke up to find that his hand had miraculously grown back. In gratitude for the healing, John put a hand made of silver on the icon. The third hand began to be reproduced on many replicas of this icon, which has been called “Of the Three Hands”. In Russian replicas, there is a tradition of writing out the third hand as if it belonged to Mother of God, rather than attached separately.
