People's Artist of the RSFSR, laureate of the State Prize of the RSFSR named after I.E. Repin. As a teenager, he attended the Perm free art workshops (1921), then for two years he studied at the jewelry department of the Yekaterinburg art-industrial school. In 1923 he was enrolled in VKHUTEIN. Studying at VKHUTEIN with A.E. Kareva, K.S. Petrova-Vodkina, M.V. Matyushina, A.I. Savinov, at the same time studied at the GINHUK under K.S. Malevich. Since 1927, under the influence of V.V. Lebedev and V.V. Bianchi began his collaboration with Detgiz. During the war years Kurdov remained in besieged Leningrad, was one of the organizers and leaders of the Leningrad workshop of the satirical poster "Battle Pencil". After the war he continued to study illustration, designed books by V. Bianki, I. Sokolov-Mikitov, N. Sladkov, the Karelian-Finnish epic "Kalevala". Made new illustrations for Kipling's fairy tales (1980), was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen diploma for them (1982).
