Historical Document – The Settlement in the Tomb of Shimon Ha'Tzadik, Signed by the Rabbis of Jerusalem, Rabbi Ya'akov Shaul Elyashar and Rabbi Shmuel Salant – 1893
Interesting historical document about the land lottery in the area of the Tomb of Shimon Ha'Tzadik by the kollelim of the Sephardic and Ashkenazic communities. The document is signed by the Rishon Le'Zion Rabbi Ya'akov Saul Elyashar and the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Shmuel Salant. March 1893.
The area of the Tomb was a Jewish-owned area; yet the official documents proving this were lost. For many years, the Jews struggled for their right to own the land until in February 1876 the whole plot was purchased with the cooperation of the Sephardic and Ashkenazic communities in Jerusalem.
Several years later, the Sephardic community decided to settle the area and in 1890, a neighborhood was built there with thirteen houses which were occupied mostly by Yemenite families.
We do not know whether the plan of the land lottery was indeed carried out; however, we do know that beside the poorhouses that were built in the neighborhood, there were also private houses of wealthy Jews, probably those who won the lottery.
The neighborhood knew many ups and downs ever since. Lately, new Jewish families have moved in.
Condition: good. Has been restored.
