Letter of Rabbi Mordechai Gimple Yaffe – 1865
A letter sent by Rabbi Mordechai Gimple Yaffe to his son, Rabbi Ya'akov Rabinowitz addressing family matters of distribution of funds and arrangement of debts between his sons. He also refers in detail to the attempt to find a wife for his nephew.
The addressee of the letter, rabbi Ya'akov Rabinowitz, lived in the town of Lutzin, there he taught his young relative, Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Ha'Cohen Kook.
The letter was probably written in 1865.
Rabbi Mordecaih Gimple Yaffe (1820-1892) was one of the greatest rabbis of his time. He was on eof the greatest students of Volozhin Yeshiva. For forty years, he served as the rabbi of Rozhinoi. He was one of the first members of 'Chovevei Zion' and corresponded on these matters with Moses Montefiore as well as with Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Kalischer and Rabbi Shmuel Mohilever. In 1888, he immigrated to Israel together with many families from his town and settled in Yahud; there, he founded a yeshiva. Three years after his immigration he got sick with malaria and died.
Rabbi Gimple was considered the spiritual-religious leader of the new Yishuv and his opinion that Heter Mechira during the Shmita is forbidden influenced the farmers who obeyed his ruling.
