ROUSSEAU JEAN-JACQUES: (1712-1778) French Writer and Philosopher. An extremely rare A.L.S., `J.J. Ro...
ROUSSEAU JEAN-JACQUES: (1712-1778) French Writer and Philosopher. An extremely rare A.L.S., `J.J. Rousseau´, one page, 4to, Montmorency, 31st January 1762, [to French bookseller Duchesne], in French. An excellent autograph letter by Rousseau, referring to one his masterpiece works Emile or On Education (1762), an educational treatise, stating `Epine told me long ago that you took at your own charge the shipping costs, and because paying from both sides would only be duplicating unnecessarily the expense, I have let you do so. We will sort this out together when the task will be finished, same with the book you provided to me and those I might still need. It is also true that suggesting to you this way of proceeding, the quickest and the less expensive, I was expecting more diligence and more straightness and consequently less packages.´ Rousseau further refers to the printing of his book which will be done in Amsterdam, saying `I am worried with the way Mr. Neaulme prints my book, I have requested some pages to him by post, and he answers that I have to ask previously for your permission. So I am asking you for it now. Greetings from deep in my heart.´ Very small foxing and remnants of former affixing to the verso, otherwise G Rousseau will publish few months later, in May 1762, his work Emile, ou de l´Education (Emile, or On Education). Rousseau considered this work the ''best and most important'' of all his writings. Due to a section of the book referring to ''Faith'', it was banned in Paris and Geneva and publicly burned in 1762. Few decades later, during the French Revolution, Emile served as an inspiration for a new system of education. Rousseau refers to l´Epine, his messenger, and refers to Mr. Neaulme, the printer in Amsterdam.
