COWPER WILLIAM: (1731-1800) English Poet & Hymnodist, a supporter of the Abolitionist Campaign and author of The Negro's Complaint (1788), often quoted by Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights movement. Rare A.L.S., Wm: Cowper, one page, 8vo, n.p., 17th April 1752, to a gentleman, evidently a banker or financier. Cowper announces 'I did not think it adviseable to mention any thing last night on the subject of the unexpected Deposite required lest it shoud get air' and continues 'But as you know the very great importance it is of to me to be furnished herewith and are not fearfull of having the Estate left upon your hands. If you wou'd be so good as to assist me in that Particular I shall be ready not only to pay you interest for the money during the time It is employd for my Service but make good all Costs & Damages occasion[ned] by moving your money and yr. deducting or paying Poundage or Charges otherwise accrueing in transacting This Affair….' In a postscript Cowper requests 'Sir for yr. Reason above be so good (considering my Deafness) to write your answer'. Neatly trimmed to the edges, only very slightly affecting the edges of a few letters of text, and with a few small tears and small areas of paper loss to the edges (some professionally repaired) and with some professional restoration to the central vertical fold (mainly visible to the verso). None of the faults affect Cowper's signature. G
