KELLY GEORGE: (1887-1974) American Playwright. A.L.S., George Kelly, two pages, 4to, Sun City, Calif...
KELLY GEORGE: (1887-1974) American Playwright. A.L.S., George Kelly, two pages, 4to, Sun City, California, 2nd November 1966, to Marshall Bean. Kelly, who typed his address and salutation, announces 'Suddenly I remember that you asked me to write to you ''in ink'', so I'll try to write legibly' and continues 'Since I have always written right at the typewriter - at least I have always composed right at the typewriter, I have almost forgotten how to write in long hand'. Kelly adds 'Your letter saddened me of course; but I was pleased to hear you say that your faith is strong. What else have we? I was one of ten children, one of the youngest, and now I am the last survivor of the family. So you see I have known many sorrows, One by one I have seen them pass…..Apropos of that you asked me to quote a few lines from some of my own writings. One speech in a play of mine that has helped me from time to time. It is from the last act of ''Fatal Weakness'' where the husband and wife are disgussing (sic) the break-up of their marriage. The husband says ''You are being very sporty about this, Ollie''. And she replies, quite philosophically ''I suppose. But I heard someone say recently, or read somewhere, that the art of living is probably the art of letting go gracefully: so maybe that's what I am trying to do''. To let go gracefully is an art. And some of the wise of this world pray all their lives that it may be given to them at last ''to let go'' gracefully. For they realize at last that ''He who brought us thus far can be trusted to take us the rest of the way''.' VG
