JACOB MAX: (1876-1944) French Poet and Painter. A very fine A.L.S., Max Jacob, one page, broken paper, 4to, Saint-Benoit-sur-Loire, 10th August 1942, to Marcel, in French. A poetic letter by Jacob, stating in part `Comme le clair de lune laissait voir les graviers de l'allée, je constatai qu'ils s'efforçaient d'imiter la disposition des étoiles sans espoir d'y parvenir pourtant (…) et moi bien satisfait de savoir que tu penses a ton vieil ami. Je prierai pour ton fils. Ici, déluge de visites qui noie mes velléités de travail mais non pas mon cœur d'ami qui va vers vous deux…´, (''As the moonlight showed the gravel of the driveway, I noticed that they were trying to imitate the arrangement of the stars without any hope of succeeding in doing so… I am very happy to know that you are thinking of your old friend.
