The Admo"r the gaon Rabbi Menachem Mendel Shneersohn, author of Tzemach Tzeddek of Lubavitch, was the third Admo"r of the Chaba"d dynasty. He was born in 1789 to his father Rabbi Shalom Shachna and to his mother, the daughter of the Alter Rebbe, Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, author of Tanya. He was orphaned of his mother at three years old, and from that point was raised and educated as a beloved son in the home of his grandfather, the Ba'al HaTanya, and he did not move from his grandfather's side for many years. He was the son-in-law of his uncle, the "Mittler Rebbe, " Rabbi Dov Ber Schneersohn. After his father-in-law's passing in 1828, he began leading Chaba"d Chassidism, and continued for almost 40 years. He was one of the leaders of his generation, emphatically opposing the maskilim, and was admired by all rabbinic leaders.
