Letter from Rabbi Nosson Nota, Son of Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Sklow, sent to Rabbi Tzvi Hersh Lehren. 1835
Letter written and signed by Rabbi Nosson Nota of Sklow, leader of the community of GR"A disciples in Jerusalem, sent to Rabbi Tzvi Hersh Lehren, head of the 'Pekidim V'Amraclim' in Amsterdam. Vilna, [1835].
Rabbi Nosson Nota was the son of Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Sklow. Rabbi Menachem Mendel was a prominent student of the GR"A. He led the community of GR"A's disciples in Jerusalem, [Rabbi Yisrael of Sklow led the GR"A's disciples in Tzefat]. Rabbi Nosson Nota succeeded his father as leader of the GR"A community after his father's death.
In the summer of 1835, Rabbi Nosson Nota traveled to Europe on dispatch from all the GR"A disciples- the 'peirushim' in Eretz Yisrael. In this letter, Rabbi Nosson Nota gives a detailed description of the harsh conditions that beset his community in Eretz Yisrael. He also told Rabbi Lehren about his trip. Rabbi Nosson Nota describes the bleak economic conditions of the Jews of Lithuania and White Russia in the wake of the terrible conflagrations that befell Minsk, Brisk and Slonim. Due their own desperate plight, he could not ask these communities to assist the disciples of the GR"A in Eretz Yisrael. He then answers a few questions that had been posed to him by Rabbi Lehren, regarding the 'chaluka' stipend and how it was divided amongst the Jerusalem and Tzefat communities.
>> The letter indicates that Rabbi Nosson Nota planned on meeting the 'Tzemach Tzedek' of Lubavitch during his trip: 'ובעז"ה כשאיה במדינת רייסן אראה פני רבן של חב"ד ואדבר אתו כפי הצורך לטובתם'. He also includes a complete paragraph describing the Admo"r: 'רבן של אנשי חב"ד שמו הרב ר' מענדיל ני"ו חתן המנוח...שם אביו ובניו לא ידעתי כעת'. He also includes a story regarding some valuable books that had been in his safekeeping that were stolen from him.
>> The entire letter was written and signed by: 'נתן נטע בהרב החסיד מוהר"מ מענדל זללה"ה מירושלים, שד"ר משתי קהילות ת"ו'. Rabbi Nosson Nota's dispatch was previously unknown and is not listed in Yaari's 'Shluchei Erertz Yisrael'. This is the first revelation of a meeting between the second generation disciple of the GR"A and the Admo"r of Lubavitch , forty years after the death of the GR"A.
