A.L.S., G. Bernard Shaw, one page, oblong 8vo, Adelphi Terrace, 22nd January 1907 to Sir Henry [Norman]. Shaw informs his correspondent of his reluctance to approve Anthony Hope Hawkins as Chairman of the Society of Authors, announcing 'Hawkins has no more sense of the tenue of public life than - shall we say Swettenham?' further stating 'and it would be much safer for us if we could retain you; but if he is willing, and you must retire, I do not see how we can improve on him. I have no such mortal objection - quite the contrary.' Together with Anthony Hope Hawkins (1863-1933) English Novelist and Playwright. A.L.S., Anthony H Hawkins, one page, 8vo, Bedford Square, 16th January 1907, also to Sir Henry [Norman]. Hawkins explains 'You know I do not seek the Chairmanship - and should be very glad if the Committee can and will make another choice. But I leave myself in yours and their hands - and if they think I can again be of use, I will not refuse' and concludes 'You will, I daresay, be kind enough to let me know the result of your enquiries. If, in the result, there is any prospect of my election being discussed, I should propose not to attend the February meeting'. With blank integral leaf.
