ALEXANDER I: (1777-1825)
ALEXANDER I: (1777-1825) Emperor of Russia 1801-25. A good A.L.S., Alexandre, (an attractive example with a flourishing paraph), two pages, 4to, Saint Petersburg, 12th December 1824, to a Finish Baron, in French. The Tsar thanks his correspondent for his offer and states 'I express my gratitude to you Monsieur le Baron and to all Senate of Finland members for the free donation they have the intention to make in order to relieve the Saint Petersburg inhabitants who have suffered this flood…. I´ll wait for you on Tuesday at 7 in the evening..´ With blank integral leaf. Very small overall, minor age wear, folded. Otherwise VG £1500-2000 The flood of 7 November 1824 was the greatest flood in the history of St. Petersburg. Short storms are not unusual in St. Petersburg, but this one far exceeded the normal levels. On the evening of 6 November, a storm broke out over the Baltic Sea and caused surges to move up the Gulf of Finland. During the course of the flood the Neva's water level reached a record height of 4.20 m above sea level, making it the most destructive flood the city had ever witnessed.
