Menu of the Coronation Dinner for Tsar Nicholas II, 1896
A menu of the coronation dinner for Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, 1896. Designed by Viktor Mikhaylovich Vasnetsov (1848-1926). Lithographic print in rich colors and gold. Dimensions: 88X28 cm. Written a tergo by Baron Carl Ericson who was one of the guests. Given in a fine gold colored frame. Frame dimensions: 116X55 cm. Very good condition. Not examined out of frame. On May 14, 1896 Nicholas' formal coronation as Tsar was held in Uspensky Cathedral located within the Kremlin. The coronation celebrations took place on May 18. When food and drink were handed out, the crowd rushed to get their share and individuals were tripped and trampled. Of the approximate half million in attendance, it is estimated that 1,429 individuals died and another 9,000 to 20,000 were injured.
