ANSTEY CHRISTOPHER: (1724-1805) English poet, famous for his long epistolary poem The New Bath Guide (1766). A.L.S., Chrst. Anstey, one page, 4to, n.p. (Bath?), 18th September 1795, to the Reverend Charles Dyer. Anstey announces 'As I am aware of your partiality to my unworthy productions, I take the liberty of sending you a little sonnet which I wrote the other day upon a very interesting subject, and which you will find on the other side of this half sheet of paper' and further remarks 'This melancholy & sentimental species of writing is, I find, very much come into fashion of late, and I have been induced to attempt it from a desire of doing poetical justice to the character of an old friend and acquaintance….' To the integral leaf appears Anstey's printed sonnet To my old Wig. Hand addressed to the verso by the poet. Some light overall age wear, a few small areas of paper loss (not affecting the text or signature) and a neat split to the central vertical fold. About VG
