[GUILLOTINE & DEATH SENTENCE]: A rare and good selection of printed original documents, including decrees, referring to guillotine and death sentences, two to four pages, 4to, dated 1791 to 1794, in French, including law decree, two pages, 28th September 1791, abolishing the death sentence under tortures; Law approval by Louis XVI, 25th March 1792, related to `Death sentence and ways of executions to be adopted in future´, it is not yet named Guillotine as will be later approved, further saying that the death sentence convicted will have his head cut `but Humanity demands that death sentence has to be the less painful when executing..the way that will be adopted will be decided by…in order to be the same all over the Kingdom..´ Together with Antoine Louis (1723-1792) French Surgeon. An interesting lengthy report on ways of decapitation and type of knifes, four pages, recommending the English system; Decree by Lebrun & Garat, 4th December 1792 stating `..Anyone suggesting or attempting to restore Royalty in France…will be sentenced to death..´; Decree, three pages, dated 13th June 1793, establishing the cost of the guillotine transport according to distance, etc.. A set of interesting content contemporary decrees. G to VG, 9 £600-900 The first name given to the decapitation artefact was La Louison or Louisette, and after Antoine Louis´ death in 1792, the definitive adoption of system was entrusted to Joseph Ignace Guillotin (1738-1814) French Physician.
