SLAVERY: An excellent and extremely interesting L.S., eight pages, folio, Le Cap, 29th September 1764, in French. The lengthy and carefully written document being the application and execution of Jean Dupuy´s will, given in June 1759, French baker resident in Le Cap, Island and coasts of Saint Domingue, stating in part `He donates to his daughter, Marie-Jeanne. Also called Jeanneton, girl aged two and a half years,
the so-called Sipion, Leveillé, Apollon and Mercure, and their three female niggers Venus (laundress), Rozalie (needlewoman) and Esther (also a good needlewoman)´. The document further reports a rare emancipation case, being Marie-Jeanne the daughter of Jean Dupuy and his nigger female servant, stating `He donates and bequeaths freedom to the named Flore, his servant, from the Mondongre nation, 35 years old aproximatly, and to his daughter, the mentioned nigger girl called Marie-Jeanne, mulatto, now aged eight years, and to help them to live in future and open a shop, Sieur Dupuy donates to Flore and Marie-Jeanne the sum of 1200 pounds, which will be paid only once their freedom will be confirmed by the superior authorities..´ Bounded. Two stamps and several countersignatures. A letter of very interesting content. Folded with edges very slightly trimmed, otherwise VG £600-900
