GOMEZ MAXIMO : (1836-1905) Cuban Generalissimo. A major military Leader during the Ten Year´s Cuban war 1868-78 and later as Cuban Commander during the War of Independence 1895-98. Signed 3.5 x 2.5 card `M. Gomez´ in bold black ink, dated beneath 8th July 1901 in his hand. Gomez refused the presidential nomination that was offered to him in 1901, and which he was expected to win unopposed. He disliked politics and felt that being Dominican-born he should not be the civil leader of Cuba. G £80-100
