OLD AFRICAN MARKA MASK, PRIMITIVE TRIBAL ART, CA. 1900

This type of African mask is appreciated by the collectors of African art for the richness of its decoration made of brass tin. The Marka is an ethnic group very close to the Bambara whose art is also well known for the masks covered with brass plates. For the Marka Do is the spirit to which the mask gives shape and constitutes its expression. Do comes from the Savannah through the mask. Within the religious system of the Marka society, Do is the most invoked spirit and Do’s cult is the most elaborate one. The Makara are organized in structured and hierarchical societies of masks. Provenance: Collection of Edward Frey, the author of The Kris: Mystic Weapon of the Malay World (Images of Asia).
